- FAQ’s
1. What is positive rewards-based training?
Positive rewards-based training focuses on reinforcing desirable behaviours with rewards such as treats, praise, or play. This method encourages dogs to repeat good behavior and is a humane and effective way to train.
2. Why should I choose a certified IMDT trainer?
Choosing a certified IMDT (Institute of Modern Dog Trainers) trainer ensures that your trainer has undergone rigorous training and adheres to ethical standards. IMDT trainers use modern, science-based methods that prioritize the welfare of the dog.
3. How long does it take to train a dog?
Training duration can vary depending on the dog's age, breed, and previous experience. At Chris' K9's, our standard training program lasts 8 weeks, with weekly sessions designed to build a strong foundation.
4. Can older dogs be trained using positive reinforcement?
Absolutely! While puppies are often more adaptable, older dogs can also learn new behaviors with positive reinforcement. Patience and consistency are key.
5. What should I bring to a training session?
Please bring your dog on a secure leash, some of their favourite treats, and any toys they enjoy. It's also helpful to bring a water bowl and some water, especially for longer sessions.
6. How do I handle unwanted behaviours at home?
Consistency is crucial. Redirect unwanted behaviours by offering an alternative, such as a toy, and reward your dog when they choose the appropriate behavior. Avoid punishment, as it can lead to fear and anxiety.
7. How can I ensure my dog is well-socialised?
Early and ongoing socialisation is important. Expose your dog to various people, dogs, and environments in a controlled manner. Our training sessions include socialisation exercises to help with this.
8. What if my dog has specific behavioural issues?
We offer one-to-one training sessions tailored to address specific behavioral issues. Contact us to discuss your dog's needs, and we'll create a personalised training plan.
9. How do I maintain training progress after the program ends?
Consistency and practice are key. Dog training is not an event you come to once a week. It is a practice you must show up to every day. Continue using the techniques learned during training, and consider joining our dog training club for ongoing support and community.
10. Can I attend the sessions with my family?
Yes, we encourage all family members who interact with the dog to attend training sessions. This ensures everyone is on the same page and reinforces consistent training at home.
